John wrote his first letter to provide assurance to believers that they were genuinely saved. John presents a list of characteristics that only those born of the Spirit of God possess. John is considered a polemic writer because he presents a very factual presentation describing those who are saved and states that those who do not possess the spiritual characteristics that he describes are not Christians at all even though they say they are.
